The buying brief for automotive components
Automotive components may use returnable containers, bins or cartons. Confirm the contact points of the container and the customer’s accepted base format.
Review the support arrangement before placing a loaded base in a rack. A general load description cannot establish suitability for unsupported spans between rack beams.
What needs particular attention
A container foot may bear on a deck gap even where the outer footprint matches. Share rack dimensions and support points, the packed load layout and the intended orientation. Ask for a confirmed suitability assessment rather than borrowing a rating from another pallet.

Prepare the enquiry
- Include a photograph or drawing of component bins delivered to an assembly supplier, with the packed dimensions and loaded mass.
- Explain container feet; loaded mass; line-side handling; return loop; customer base specification so the proposed base can be compared with the load.
- Add rack support; beam spacing; orientation; loaded weight distribution and distinguish confirmed requirements from items awaiting a decision.
- Send the delivery postcode and unloading arrangements. Ask for availability, suitability and delivery to be confirmed in the quotation.

Before agreeing the order
Review the proposed base against the packed goods, the handling equipment and the receiver’s written policy. If an eligible exchange pallet is required, state that separately from the 1200 × 800 footprint. Confirm treatment and marking requirements for export where relevant.
Keep the agreed specification with the dispatch instruction. If the packaging, load pattern or handling route changes, revisit the enquiry rather than assuming the previous base remains suitable.
